It superseded two categories which existed in 1981-1996: "Beste deutschsprachige Erzählung", which covered novelettes and novellas, and "Beste deutschsprachige Kurzgeschichte" (sic), which covered short stories. The name of this category was changed to "Beste deutschsprachige Erzählung" (sic) in 2008.
