  • Note: After Beacon Magazines purchased Wonder Stories from Hugo Gernsback in 1936, it converted the magazine to a juvenile. Later, when Sam Merwin took over as editor in 1945, he dropped those juvenile leanings. Later companion magazines were Startling Stories, which published long novels, Captain Future, Strange Stories, Fantastic Story Magazine, and Space Stories. Thrilling Wonder Stories was merged with Startling Stories in 1955, which then lasted three more issues and died. Highlights: Early covers by Howard V. Brown helped to inspire the BEM acronym (Bug-Eyed Monsters). Alfred Bester won an amateur writing contest, resulting in the publication of his first story, while Ray Bradbury's first short story appeared here in 1943. A. E. van Vogt's The Weapon Shops of Isher and Leigh Brackett's The Sword of Rhiannon were both published here. Publisher: Beacon Magazines, Inc.; Better Publications, Inc.;Standard Magazines, Inc.
