  • Note: "Thomas Carnacki is an early fictional Occult Detective ..., who, unlike most such investigators, uses scientific means to investigate hauntings. He was created by William Hope Hodgson with five Club Stories that ran in The Idler in 1910 ... Carnacki would generally arm himself with a camera, flashlight and gun when investigating a case. ..." --SFE3, "Carnacki" Carnacki was "commissioned by the publisher to cash in on the success of Algernon Blackwood's John Silence (1908)". --SFE: Encyclopedia of Fantasy, biographical entry by Mike Ashley Hodgson published some works in severely abridged versions, usually in order to secure US copyright protection. One instance is the abridgment of four Carnacki stories in Carnacki, the Ghost Finder; And, a Poem (New York: Paul R Reynolds, 1910). That one has been published many times, including in translation; see the 1910 short story Carnacki, the Ghost-Finder (condensed). The four stories were published in full in both the 6-story 1913 and 9-story 1947 collections entitled Carnacki the Ghost-Finder. --SFE3 articles and ISFDB publication records
