  • Note: Monthly magazine based in New York City January 1924 to 1950(?) H. L. Mencken and George Jean Nathan (1882–1958) founded the magazine, as its editors, as or after they departed from The Smart Set. In the 1930s Lawrence E. Spivak served as business manager, acquired the magazine, and established Mercury Publications (which subsequently introduced Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine and Fantasy & Science Fiction). Spivak edited The American Mercury from 1944 until he sold it in 1950. --Wikipedia (multiple articles) Continued as The New American Mercury from 1950, it became a magazine of the American conservative movement, and no longer a "mainstream magazine" from 1952 or 1953 to 1981. --Wikipedia
