  • Note: The three works are catalogued as volumes 1 to 3 by HathiTrust (above) and probably by many libraries. One front page of the first book notes: "The following Tales are written in the style in which they are generally related by those who believe in them; and it is the object of the Compiler to illustrate, by their means, the Supersitions of the Irish Peasantry—Superstitions which the most casual observer cannot fail to remark powerfully influence their conduct and manner of thinking." The preface to part 2 remarks that it has been promised in the preface to the second edition of part 1 , and promises part 3 thus: "... the subject is far from exhausted. But here, at least as relates to Ireland, I have determined to finish my task. A third or supplementary volume will, however, appear under the same title; and although forming a separate work on the fairy superstitions of Wales and other countries, it may be considered as illustrative of those current in Ireland."
