In 1895 publisher David Nutt announced a cheaper edition that omits "Preface, Notes, References, and Parallels"; that is, the original story text and illustrations alone. At ISFDB the sometimes-omitted contents are titles "Preface ([title of work])" and "Notes and References ([title of work])" by Joseph Jacobs. Publications listed here may or may not contain the Essay contents by Jacobs. As a goal, publication records should specify whether the original work is complete.
