  • Note: Unknown genre Eric Eller covers five novels that feature "the Aquila family" as main characters. In historical sequence they are The Eagle of the Ninth, The Silver Branch, Frontier Wolf, The Lantern Bearers, and Dawn Wind. "Sword at Sunset (where the Aquila family plays a minor role)" and Dawn Wind are Romano-Celtic, set after the departure of the last Roman legion. Eller reviews the former separately. The first novel opens in A.D. 113, the last spans c. 577-597. On the protagonists: "Military men all, each plays a part in the struggle to Romanize Britain and then defend what's left of Roman Britain. Though classified as 'young adult' books, there is more than enough depth to sustain any adult reader. The only leaning towards younger readers is the consistent youthfulness of each main character. All of the main characters start out within a few years of twenty, with only The Lantern Bearers carrying the story into middle age." --Eric Eller, "Rosemary Sutcliff, Roman Britain historical novels" (TheGreenManReview.com) Wikipedia-EN as of 2016-06-10 lists in the so-called "Eagle of the Ninth series" the same six novels (including Sword at Sunset, 5th "in fictional chronological order") and appends two more, Sword Song and The Shield Ring. All are "linked by the Aquila family dolphin ring". The last is set in Norse-Britain during the resistance to Norman conquest c. 1100. 7 of 8 are in ISFDB as of 2017-04-04, not The Dawn Wind.
