  • Author: Andrew Lang
  • Date: 1888-00-00
  • Publisher: J. W. Arrowsmith
  • Price:
5/-?Prior to decimilisation (1968-1971), UK books were priced in shillings, or shillings and pence, where 20 shillings equals one pound and 12 old pence equals one shilling. Shillings were indicated with a variety of suffixes, e.g. 3s, 3', 3", 3/ all mean 3 shillings. Any number after that is additional pence, usually 6 (half a shilling) but sometimes 3 or 9 (a quarter of a shilling or three-quarters of a shilling).
  • Pages: 86
  • Format:
hc?Hardcover. Used for all hardbacks of any size.
  • Type: NOVEL
  • Notes: 1st ed. (ordinary and large paper editions evidently; this publication record represents both as of 2016-11-05) Price from advertisement, back pages of Lang's Prince Prigio (Arrowsmith, 1889) LCCN (which links e-copy at HathiTrust Digital Library (HDL)), and OCLC 7229289: -- "[1888]" -- 6 preliminary leaves, 86 pages color frontispiece, color plates 30 cm -- "No. 43 of limited edition of 100 copies on large, hand-made paper." (not supported by e-copy interior) "[1888]" HDL catalog record provides full view of one copy without original cover (2 copies of 1 original from U California)
    • HDL notes "No. 45 of limited edition of 100 copies on large, hand-made paper." (not supported by e-copy interior)
    • Title page complex, no date
    • t.p. verso credits letter-press Arrowsmith, drawings lithographed Robinson, both of Bristol
    • Dedication, letter To Jeanie Lang, Lappa(?) from A. L.
    • "Whuppity Stoorie's Song in this Tale is by the Author's Friend, F. De Q. M."
    • text with b/w decorations and colour illustrations spans p1-86
    • p86 footer "J. W. Arrowsmith, Printer, Quay Street, Bristol."
Another library record of the large paper edition evidently, OCLC 7380619, notes among others: -- "Paper made by John Dickinson & Co. - Laid signature on last leaf." -- "Limited edition of 100 copies on large, hand-made paper. Copies are hand-numbered." -- "Two page publisher's list follows the text." And gives the description "[4] preliminary leaves, 86 pages [14] leaves of plates : illustrations ; 26 cm" (note size difference) Apparently that is the large-paper edition. LCCN and OCLC records may represent the ordinary edition or large paper edition poorly catalogued. HDL apparently provides the ordinary edition poorly catalogued.
