Apparently "John Lane" was an imprint of The Bodley Head. Lane's nephews Allen Lane (1902–1970), Richard Lane, and John Lane founded Penguin Books in 1935. One 1907 title page displays these three lines (all caps): London: John Lane, the Bodley Head. New York: John Lane Company. MCMVII. Coverage of "John Lane" publications may be found in US newspapers of that time. Library of Congress (loc.gov) notes the John Lane Company, 140 Fifth Avenue, New York, founded in November 1896 and "publishing the parent firm's own books from London".
