  • Note: London   Richard Bentley, New Burlington-street, W.,   Publisher in Ordinary to Her Majesty. --two-line footer of 1866 newspaper advertisements One successor to the partnership Colburn and Bentley, 1829 to 1932 Succeeded by Richard Bentley & Son, 1871 to 1898, then acquired by Macmillan and Co. Richard Bentley (1794–1871) and his brother Samuel (1785–1868), from a publishing family, established their own business in 1819. They were the first (printers?) "to prominently feature wood-engraved illustrations". Henry Colburn and Richard Bentley signed a partnership agreement 1829-06-03 and a dissolution agreement 1832-09-01. They published together the first 19 volumes of the Standard Novels series (Bentley Standard Novels, below). Bentley started the magazine Bentley's Miscellany, edited by Charles Dickens 1836-1839 and then briefly by William Harrison Ainsworth, who bought it in 1853. George Bentley (1828–1895), the eldest surviving son, eventually led the firm, which was renamed Richard Bentley and Son after RB's death in 1871. --Wikipedia, multiple articles "Richard Bentley" as a business may be the direct successor to S. and R. Bentley, 1819 to 1829(?), printers and probably publishers, not in the database December 2018.
