  • Publication Series: Le Masque - Science Fiction Pub. Series Record # 166
  • Note: Name : Le Masque Science Fiction (or Science-Fiction). Publisher : Librairie des Champs Elysées 10 Rue de Marignan Paris. Period of activity : 1974 to 1981. Series' Editors : Jacques Van Herp then Michel Demuth from 1978 on. Number of titles in the series : 116. Numbering system : straight numeric from 1 to 116 (no holes). Format : paperback, 11 x 16.5 cm, stayed the same during all the life of the series. Length : usually runs to 250 pages (roughly equivalent to a 200-page English language publication), a few are longer (300+) and some are notably shorter (190 pages with a bigger typeface), they are generally halves of Ace Doubles (Tubb or Bulmer). Presentation : stayed the same, spine and back cover black with white or yellow lettering; horizontal yellow stripe on spine, separating title and author's name. Artists : stock covers from (at first) Ace Books then from English artists (lots of Foss and Pennington) and finally by French artists, such as Philippe Caza. Reprinting policy : quite erratic, some 'minor' titles (Dermèze) having been printed three times in a short time, some titles have been reprinted with a different cover (Asimov, Dick) but the majority of the series hasn't been reprinted at all. Origin of texts : At first, the titles were taken from other French publishers (Satellite, Métal or OPTA) then they started to be first French translations or PBO by French authors. Bibliographical data present on the books : Dépôt Légal and ISBN are always present (there are at least two wrong ISBNs). The AI was at first present, then dropped (it resurfaces sometimes). The illustrators started to be credited late in the series with the arrival of French artists. The English titles are generally given with original copyright dates for the novels or the short stories. Content : The series has a few original anthologies (by Marianne Lecomte) and about twenty collections (some original).
