Albert Boni (1892–1981) and
Horace Brisbin Liveright (1884–1933) founded "The Modern Library of the World's Best Classics" and
Boni & Liveright in 1917. "Modern Library was formed as a reprinting line, publishing inexpensive books from European modernists, while Boni & Liveright published the work of contemporary Americans."
Boni previously published the inexpensive, pocket-size Little Leather Library (
Little Leather Library Corporation, 1916 to 1923).
