Note:
The 1967 collection Ghosts' High Noon is the US edition of this one.
Synopsis:
"Bartholomew Fell was not the only ghost associated with the old house. Though Miss Amaury was sceptical there were apparently ghost dogs who occupied the real dogs' baskets and tripped people up. Miss Amaury, too, was incredulous of her fellow-guests' stories; throughout the fortnight of the Music Course, however remarkable the facts, she would always have some rational explanation of the strange, enthralling tales the other students told each other in the evenings."

3s, 3', 3", 3/ all mean 3 shillings. Any number after that
is additional pence, usually 6 (half a shilling) but
sometimes 3 or 9 (a quarter of a shilling or three-quarters
