Note: First published anonymously in Fraser's Magazine, January 1838. The attribution to Maginn is made by Peter Haining, the editor of The Frankenstein Omnibus, who writes: "[T]here is strong evidence that the author was William Maginn, the co-founder of the magazine, who was also one of its most prolific contributors and especially noted for his humorous tales and parodies. As the January issue contained several other items bearing his name, it is understandable in an age when a good deal was published anonymously that Maginn should have withheld his name from a tale that was, after all, deliberately making fun of a popular literary work written by an authoress who may u ell have been known to him personally. The style of the tale is also undeniably similar to that of many of Maginn's other parodies."
