Note: This is the revised and expanded version (1887, about 7,800 words long) of the initial short story by Guy de Maupassant (1886, about 3,500 words long). Both versions were published under the same title, "Le Horla", but differ considerably as far as their narrative structures are concerned.

It is not clear which of the many translators who contributed to the complete edition worked on "Le Horla"; contributing translators include A. E. Henderson, Albert M. Cohn McMaster, Louise Charlotte Garstin Quesada, Percy Fitzhugh, Henri C. Olinger, Adolphe Cohn, and perhaps others. This translation has been reprinted many times, with the collective translator credit or, more often, uncredited.
