Synopsis: Overlooking the estuary of the River Rouge stands the north-westerly town of Rougerossbergh. It was once a mill-town; now the major industry and largest employer is Bourge Floor Coverings, and the uncrowned king is Sir Alphonse Bourge. In the eyes of some at least, an even more dominant industry, long-established and woven into the very fabric of society, is mental ilness – there are three mental hospitals. One of them houses – much of the time – young Kevin and his floury friend Arnold; also Dr Zander, whose professional concern with Kevin has effects more profound than his training anticipated. Beneath the town and its history lies, geologically speaking, a bed of limestone, seamed, fissured – honeycombed – with passages and chambers, making room for another world. In exploring the reality of that other world David Pownall displays an imaginative boldness and a poetic vision which add a rich new dimension to the unique brand of comedy and eye for the absurd manifest in The Raining Tree War, African Horse and God Perkins.
