Editor: Wilhelmina Harper
Date: 1936-08-20
Type: ANTHOLOGY [juvenile]
Webpages: LibraryThing
Language: English
Note:
  • 30 contents beside Foreword and illustrations 26 stories, 4 poems (LibraryThing implies)
  • Review by user JalenV at LibraryThing.com includes a list of those 30 contents in which, "The origin of the stories is as given in the book except for changes to no-longer acceptable terms. I've written a brief description under each title." There 15 are marked (*) as "especially suited to the enjoyment of younger children", according to Harper.
  • 4 of 30 contents beside Foreword and illustrations are not in the 1965 version, with same foretitle Ghosts and Goblins; namely, the stories that begin on pages 25, 133, 156, 208 (unknown source for page numbers). The 1965 version contains 8 works not in this one.
  • WorldCat records of the 1st ed. and a 1942 reprint provide lists of Contents with these differences in story titles: OCLC 1445403: Halloween (3), witch-dance-people, So-Bee-It, wishing well, wonderful land OCLC 704434597: Hallowe'en, witch-dance-place, So-Bee-yit, wishing-well, wonderful lamb The latter is known to report the wrong illustrator.
Synopsis:
"Collection of stories of all countries and times dealing with -- as the title indicates -- ghosts and goblins, witches, animal spirits, magic. A Somewhat more mature group of stories than the usual fairy tale collection, and with a special sort of focus for the time when spooks are in order. Miss Harper is an excellent anthologist, and this measures up to standard." --Kirkus Reviews (contemporary notice quoted in full, undated online)

Year Title

  • REVISED EDITION, do not merge with the 1936 edition
  • 26 stories, 8 poems (KirkusReviews.com) Great overlap with contents of the 1936 version
  • "[T]he book has several new tales from Costa Rica, Japan, and England, and [new] poems by Carl Sandburg, Rowena Bennett, and Aileen Fisher." --Polly Goodwin, Chicago Tribune 1965-10-24 pO15 "The Junior Bookshelf"
  • Publication year 1965 from the Kirkus Reviews notice (starred) and Chi. Tribune review. Otherwise not found 2017-06-06 in search (ghosts goblins harper) of US newspapers 1964 1965. The Library of Congress gives "[1965]", so the year may not be stated in the book, although some WorldCat libraries give 1965 simply.
  • ISFDB previously reported year 1964. The Supernatural Index gives year 1964 for a second publication of some stories that are in both versions. One WorldCat library gives 1964 for the new version (250 pages, short subtitle), OCLC 732677336. Perhaps there was a 1964 printing of the original version (271 pp), but the candidate WorldCat record gives copyright date 1964, OCLC 671307782.
