Note: The stories that become the Arabian Nights developed during the 8th-12th century. The oldest extant version known is a 14th or 15th Syrian edition in the Bibliothèque National (France). The first translation into a European language was the Galland translation (of this Syrian edition) into French in 1704. This first translation into English was done anonymously in 1706 from the Galland translation. For more details, see the Wikipedia entry above. The 11th edition credits the translator as "Sir Edwin Durning-Lawrence". The 19th edition credits the translator as Richard Gough ("A new edition, corrected, edited, with a preface by R. Gough"), and is listed separately under the title series. Several other editions listed below appear to be imprints (or pirated editions) of one of the Longman editions, and this is noted with those editions. Thus a "10th edition" published in the 1770's would very likely be a reprint, not by Longman's, of the Longman's 10th edition.

Synopsis: The long title, often used for this publication, is: "Arabian Nights Entertainments: Consisting of One Thousand and One Stories, Told by the Sultaness of the Indies to Divert the Sultan from the Execution of a Bloody Vow He Had Made to Marry a Lady Every Day and Have Her Cut Off Next Morning, to Avenge Himself for the Disloyalty of His First Sultaness, &c.". And that's also a reasonable synopsis.
