1613ⓘJohn Carlyle, in his book on "<a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=qglMAQAAIAAJ&pg=PR22&lpg=PR22&dq="LA+VISIONE+POEMA"">Dante's Divine Comedy</a>" writes: "In 1595, the Academicians del Crusca, taking the Aldine edition and comparing it with about one hundred different manuscripts, gave out their text of the <em>Commedia</em>, in a somewhat shabby and very incorrect little volume. Two of the four incorrect editions published in the 17th century have the title..." given here. I.e., he is referring to the two editions of this particular variant title.

"It engages 'The Divine Comedy' with more regard than is usually shown for the athletic, colloquial quality of the original. ... fortunate avoidance of rhetorical splendor ... pure, in this respect, and unpretentious."
Unfortunately the project "to discard Dante's rhyme and keep his meter" is a failure inevitably. Eleven-syllable blank verse doesn't work in English, no more than the rhyme would.
