Note: Begun in 1922, this was Kafka's third attempt to write a novel. It's uncertain if he really intended to finish it. Kafka's second novel to be published. Initially edited and published by Max Brod, in 1982 S. Fischer published the critical edition, which follows Kafka's handwritten notes. This was edited by Malcolm Pasley.
