  • The hero Alroy is an eastern Jew, during the 12th century, and is "Prince of the Captivity" as "an asserted descendant of David" who ruled the Jews for many purposes, although they acknowledged conquerors. ... "With regard to the supernatural machinery of this romance, it is Cabalistical and correct." That is, genuinely from "the traditions of the Hebrews". --from pp. ix-xi in the original Preface (Saunders and Otley, 1833)
  • This novel "has some claim to be the first Alternate History tale, with the eponymous false messiah establishing a global empire in the twelfth century, though the alternity is only scattily argued." (underscore represents linked cross-reference) --SFE3, biographical entry by Peter Nicholls and John Clute In the Encyclopedia of Fantasy entry by John Clute, Alroy is a Fantasy of History.
