Synopsis: The Marquis de la Tour-Samuel tells of an experience that has troubled him ever since: He met an old friend who looked prematurely aged. This friend, saying that since the death of his wife he hadn't been able to bring himself to go into his house, asked the Marquis to go there and fetch some papers. When he did, a woman in white appeared and asked him to comb her hair. The Marquis overcame his desire to flee and obliged her. She disappeared but some of her hairs remained clinging to his coat.
