Title: L'auberge Title Record # 1733597
Author: Guy de Maupassant
Date: 1886-09-01
Type: SHORTFICTION
Length: short story
Language: French
Note: A genre story in that Ulrich hears a ghostly voice, even if it is the product of derangement; also, Maupassant's stories of madness are all counted among his fantastic fiction. First published in Les Lettres et les Arts, 1 September 1886.
Synopsis: The Hauser family closes their mountain inn for the winter, leaving behind old Gaspard Hari, the young guide Ulrich Kunsi, and the dog Sam to take care of the place. Gaspard Hari disappears in the snow, and Ulrich and Sam search for him unsuccessfully. Ulrich, deranged by loneliness, begins to hear the ghostly voice of the lost man, incessantly reproaching him. He takes to drinking. When the family returns in the spring, they find him in a terrible state.
