Synopsis: The Marquis d'Arville explains why no one in his family hunts: A century earlier, a wolf, with seemingly human intelligence, was devastating the livestock of the region. Two Arville brothers hunted it unsuccessfully, until one day, they spied it and took off on a mad pursuit, in the course of which one brother died. In the end the wolf reappeared and attacked the other brother, who managed to overcome it. The story of these terrors has been handed down in the family and has discouraged them all from wanting to hunt.
