Author: Madeleine Truel
Date: 1943-12-00
Type: SHORTFICTION
Language: French
Synopsis: The Child (whose name the reader will never know), lost or abandoned, lives in the Parisian Métro, and knows nothing of the outside world. The names of the different stations evoke to him a fantasy world, often based on puns : thus Père-Lachaise, named after a graveyard, becomes "le père La Chaise", "the man with the chair", who sets him on his initiatic dream-quest in le Monde Merveilleux, "the Marvellous World". His mission is to free la Muette "the Mute Woman" from the spells of giant Pelleport. On the success of this quest depends the Child's awakening to reality and the world outside. The story, written during the German occupation of France, can be construed as an allegory of the political reality of those days, and partakes in the escapist literature and filmography of the time. Its author, Madeleine Truel, fought with the French Resistance and died in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp in 1945.
