Note: This is tale #47 in Pu Songling's collection of Strange Tales from a Chatterbox's Studio (聊齋誌異, Liáozhāi zhìyì), usually known as Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio or Strange Tales from Liaozhai. The original Chinese title of this story, 陸判, is transcribed as Lù pàn in the pinyin notation, and means literally "the judging of Lu"; it also appears as 陆判 in simplified Chinese characters. It is composed of 陸, Lù, a family name meaning "Land", and 判 pàn, "to judge", "(to) sentence" (among other meanings).
