Note: This is tale #431 in Pu Songling's collection of Strange Tales from a Chatterbox's Studio (聊齋誌異, Liáozhāi zhìyì), usually known as Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio or Strange Tales from Liaozhai (but note that it is #433 in Sidney L. Sondergard's edition). The original Chinese title of this story, 竹青, is transcribed as Zhú qīng in the pinyin notation. It is a personal name (that of a female crow, the hero's mate in the story) and means literally "green bamboo"; it is the same in simplified Chinese characters. It is composed of 竹, zhú, "bamboo" and 青 qīng, "green", "blue" (among other meanings).
