Note: This is tale #3 in Pu Songling's collection of Strange Tales from a Chatterbox's Studio (聊齋誌異, Liáozhāi zhìyì), usually known as Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio or Strange Tales from Liaozhai.
The Chinese title of this story, 屍變, means literally "The Changing Corpse", "The Transforming Corpse" ("The Resuscitated Corpse" in Giles' translation, "The Restless Corpse" in Sondergard's, "The Evil Dead" elsewhere); it appears as 尸变 in simplified Chinese characters. It is composed of 屍, shī, "corpse", "dead body" and 變 biàn, "to change, to vary; to transform, to metamorphose" (among other meanings).
As the story takes place at an inn in the town of 蔡店 (Caidian), it has also received the English title of "The Inn at Ts'ai-Tien".
