Note: This is tale #58 in Pu Songling's collection of Strange Tales from a Chatterbox's Studio (聊齋誌異, Liáozhāi zhìyì), usually known as Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio or Strange Tales from Liaozhai. The original Chinese title of this story, 鳳陽士人, is transcribed as Fèng yáng shì rén in the pinyin notation, and means "a Fengyang scholar"; it appears as 凤阳士人 in simplified Chinese characters. It is composed of 鳳陽, Fèng yáng, "Fengyan (county)" and 士人, shì rén, "scholar" (literally "scholary person").
