Note: This is tale #40 in Pu Songling's collection of Strange Tales from a Chatterbox's Studio (聊齋誌異, Liáozhāi zhìyì), usually known as Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio or Strange Tales from Liaozhai.
The Chinese title translates as "painted skin" or "painted leather", the ambiguity being perhaps intentional (see synopsis).
Synopsis: This story tells of a scholar who is attracted to a beautiful maiden and brings her home, only to discover she is an ugly female ghoul who puts on a facial mask to look attractive, after "painting" it daily [from Wikipedia].
