Note: This is story #26 in Feng Menglong's collection of Stories Old and New (古今小說, Gǔjīn xiǎoshuō), published in 1620, and also known as Illustrious Words to Instruct the World (喻世明言, Yù shì míngyán). The Chinese title of this story means "Chénxiǎo causes (literally, [is the] cause of) seven deaths with one bird"; it appears as 沉小官一鸟害七命 in simplified Chinese characters. It is composed of 沈小, Chénxiǎo, a man's name apparently meaning "of little weight", 官, guān, "organ", 一鳥, yī niǎo, "one bird", and 害七命 hài qī mìng, "harm seven lives".
