Note: This story was first published in January and February 1921 in the children's magazine 赤い鳥, Akai tori, "Red Bird", specialized in fairy tales and nursery rhymes. The original Japanese title of this story, アグニの神, is transcribed as Aguni no kami in the Revised Hepburn notation, and means "god Agni" (the Indian god of fire). It is composed of 神, kami, "god", の, no, "of" and アグニ, A-gu-ni, the kana transcription of Agni (sanskrit अग्नि, agni).
