Note: This is story #117 in Kawabata's collection of Palm-of-the-Hand Stories (掌の小説, Tenohira no shōsetsu), in the revised edition of 1989. The Japanese title of this story, 不死, is transcribed as Fushi in the Revised Hepburn notation, and means "immortal" or "immortality" (sinicized pronunciation, from Mandarin bùsǐ). It is composed of 不, fu, "non", "not", "un-" and 死, shi, "dead", "death".
