Note: This story was first published in Abbé Prévost's preface for Trois nouveaux contes de fées, published in 1735. The stated author of the book is a "M. de Lintot", but this collection is generally attributed to Prévost himself. The title "Les revenants de la terre de Cléray" was made up by Francis Lacassin for his 2000 anthology, Les maîtres de l'étrange et de la peur.
