Note: Photo by Gerry de la Ree on Virgil Finlay's 55th birthday, July 23, 1969. Finlay stands next to an easel showing his first attempt at a cover for Weird Tales magazine. The oil painting was done in 1936 but not used until the Summer 1973 issue. According to de la Ree, "the reproduction completely distorted the colors and left the painting only a ghost of its true brilliance."
