Note: This fixup novel was published, in slightly different form, in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, in 5 installments. The titles of the installments and their mapping to chapters in the novel are as follows: The source of the chapter mapping is References (Hothouse). The duplication of Chapter 6 is as stated in the essay and is presumably erroneous. The US variant, The Long Afternoon of Earth, is slightly abridged from the UK edition - the US didn't get a full Hothouse till 1976. The major cuts from Hothouse are as follows:
  • First third of Chapter 14
  • Last third of Chapter 18
  • Four paragraphs in Chapter 25
Additionally, there are many other minor cuts and textual variations. The source of the cuts is Introduction (Hothouse). As usual with Aldiss, the "W." may or may not appear on Cover/Spine/Copyright Page, etc, so please stick with title page author when checking.
Synopsis: The far future. The sun is about to go nova. Earth and moon have ceased their axial rotation and present one face continuously to the sun. The bright side of Earth is covered with a a vast carnivorous forest. The protagonists, Gren and his lady, journey to the terrifying dark side of the earth.
