Five of the stories are from 1812 French-language anthology Fantasmagoriana, containing 8 stories translated from German; the other story by Utterson, based on the years ago account of a friend. None of the contributions is credited in the 1st ed. On the title page of the Library of Congress copy (Archive.org, above) "Mrs. Utterson" is pencilled under the line (all caps) "translated from the French." "The English translation from the French as Tales of the Dead appeared in 1813, but would not be reprinted until almost a hundred and eighty years later." --Maximiliaan van Woudenberg That is, the 1992 anthology Tales of the Dead: Ghost Stories of the Villa Diodati. Following van Woudenberg, a reported 1820 reprint is probably spurious, but we preserve this former ISFDB publication note (quote): The translator (and author of the original short 'The Storm') was revealed to be 'Mrs. Utterson' in relation to an 1820 reprint, though no scan of that or any later 19th century edition is available online at this time (August 2015).

Synopsis: Utterson identifies the 5 translations in relation to 8-story anthology Fantasmagoriana "The first four tales in this collection, and the last, are imitated from a small French work, which professes to be translated from the German [footnote identifies Fantasmagoriana]. It contains several other stories of a similar cast; but which did not appear equally interesting, and they have therefore been omitted.
