- One source suggests Louis Léger. The Internet Archive shows this as a Bohemian tale collected by Leger in his Contes Populaires Slaves (Popular Tales of the Slavs).
- Another source suggests Paul Sébillot (see http://newspaperslibrary.org/articles/eng/Paul_S%C3%A9billot and http://www.gutenberg.us/articles/eng/The_Enchanted_Watch).
- Lang's The Green Fairy Book credits this to "Duelin", but in his preface he makes no mention of Duelin, nor does he mention Léger, but he does mention Sébillot (although the book contains other material from Sébillot).
