Note: According to Zakhar Prilepin's biography of the author, this story was based on Leonov's eponymous poem written in 1916. The first version of the story written in the early 1920s was banned by Soviet censors and remained unpublished as of 2018. A rewritten version was incorporated into the 1924 novel "Barsuki" as a "story within a story".
