Note: Note in The Valancourt Book of Horror Stories, Volume Three: "Though the original 1918 version has appeared in a couple anthologies over the decades, the 1941 version, entirely rewritten by Reid later in life, has to our knowledge not previously been reprinted." It is not clear where (if anywhere) this version of the story was published in 1941. Update by Username (05-08-2021): Reid published Retrospective Adventures in 1941, a mixture of fiction and nonfiction, including "Courage" (pp. 238-247); this is likely where the rewritten version came from.
