Synopsis: The narrator, a painter, is engaged by a former friend to stay with him and paint his wife's portrait. It is a strangely gloomy household; the painter's host eventually reveals that his wife is not the woman he was once in love with, who is now dead under awful circumstances. Meanwhile, the painter has taken to rising at dawn every day to work on the portrait of a mysterious, sad woman who visits his studio at that hour ...
