Title: Short Stories, Scraps and Shavings Title Record # 2549423
Author: George Bernard Shaw
Date: 1934-00-00
Type: COLLECTION
Language: English
Note:
  • 14 stories, revised (see below)
  • Thirteen stories were collected in 1932 as Short Stories: Scraps & Shavings, or volume 6 in Shaw's Works as published by Constable & Co. OCLC 11445458, also as published by Wm. H. Wise & Co. OCLC 757360089. The latter WorldCat record apparently quotes from the book:   "Thirteen stories first published in various magazines between 1885 and 1931." Internet Archive provides a Limited Book Preview of the 13-story Wise & Co. collection, front pages only (1932 Contents, 13 stories viewed at HathiTrust).
  • "The Adventures of the Black Girl in Her Search for God" was published as a chapbook later in 1932.
  • Encyclopedia entries on Shaw by John Clute (SFE3 and Encyclopedia of Fantasy) cover this collection as an omnibus of the 13-story collection and "The Black Girl". The sequence of Contents in ISFDB publication records all show the 13 stories in their original sequence, with "The Black Girl" either last (1934) or first (1946) of the 14, the latter without any stated source.
  • Revised Certainly these stories contain revisions made between 1932 and 1934 (which distinguish Constable's "Standard Edition" of Shaw's Works from its earlier edition). Clute states that the omnibus "includes revisions of both Black Girl and the earlier Short Stories" and suggests that such should be taken for granted throughout Shaw's lifetime. He "could make constant revisions (often unsignalled) to reprints and resortings of his work. The bibliography of any GBS item, therefore, is likely to be complex; no attempt has been made here to trace the textual history of individual titles." --quoting Clute from Encyclopedia of Fantasy (1997)

1/-?Prior to decimilisation (1968-1971), UK books were priced in shillings, or shillings and pence, where 20 shillings equals one pound and 12 old pence equals one shilling. Shillings were indicated with a variety of suffixes, e.g. 3s, 3', 3", 3/ all mean 3 shillings. Any number after that is additional pence, usually 6 (half a shilling) but sometimes 3 or 9 (a quarter of a shilling or three-quarters of a shilling).
