It is actually by <a href="http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/se.cgi?arg=Charles%20Fenno%20Hoffman&type=Name&mode=exact">Charles Fenno Hoffman</a> who reprinted it in his book <i>Wild Scenes in the Forest and Prairie</i> (1838) under the title 'The Inn at Wolfswald'. Also published under Hoffman's name (as 'The Haunted Inn') in the 1837 British anthology <i>Flowers of Fiction</i>.

1888ⓘFirst published (unsigned) in <i>The American Monthly Magazine</i>, July, 1835, as "A Night Adventure in the Alleghanies." When this story was reprinted in <i>Weird Tales: Irish</i>, some changes were made to give it an Irish setting (mainly changes of names, and not much rewriting the descriptions of the German-populated regions of Pennsylvania; I suspect that a person thoroughly familiar with Ireland would be hard-put to recognize that island when reading this story).
