• According to William Michael Rossetti (brother of DGR, editor of the magazine), Introduction to the 1901 facsimile reprint of The Germ (Gutenberg #17649, pp. 18-20): • This story was finished late in December 1849, for the inaugural issue of the magazine. • The privately printed 1869 pamphlet sometimes sold for "£10 and upwards". • The only substantial revision was the church at Pisa re-named "San Petronio", from the anachronistic "San Rocco".

Synopsis: "Rossetti's 'Hand and Soul' (1849) [sic] and 'St. Agnes of Intercession' (1850) appeared in The Germ, the short-lived organ of the original Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Both stories show the young Rossetti's attempts to define the role of the painter, in characteristically supernatural terms. ..."
