First published as a four-part serial in All-Story magazine, starting on April 4, 1914. Also published serially in the New York Evening World newspaper June 8-13, 1914. First book publication was in 1922. It was first published in the UK as an eleven-part serial in Pluck (a weekly boys' magazine), starting on March 31, 1923. It was also published as "Lost Inside the Earth", a three-part serial in Modern Mechanics & Invention magazine, starting in February 1929.
