Type: SHORTFICTION
Length: novelette
Series: Sam Hall Universe
Language: English
Note: Note that the story has been revised for The Best of Poul Anderson probably by Anderson himself. The salesman in the opening paragraphs no longer has a "punched card" which is checked for "holes," but simply a "card" that's checked for "magnetic encodings." He's no longer bound for "New Pittsburgh," but for "Cincinnati." Superfluous words have been removed from many sentences, etc.

Any number after that is additional pence, usually 6 (half a shilling) but sometimes 3 or 9 (a quarter of a shilling or three-quarters of a shilling).
