- This story was initially written in French under the title "Voix maudite", and published in Les Lettres et les arts, August 1887.
- It was re-written in English by the author in 1889, and then published in her collection Hauntings : Fantastic Stories, London, Heinemann, 1890, under the title "A Wicked Voice".
- This English version was then translated back into French by Michel Chrestien in Lee's collection Les Epées de l'Effroi ; histoires surnaturelles, 1970, under the new title Une voix maléfique.
- This last French version was reproduced in Anne Richter's anthology Le fantastique féminin d'Ann Racliffe à nos jours, 1977.
- The English version was translated again into French by Sophie Geoffroy-Menoux under the title La voix maudite, and included in the collection La voix maudite in 2001.
