Language: Russian
Note:
  • A collection of (ultimately) 20 linked stories.
  • The first ten stories in this collection were published in 1961 in the "Ural" monthly, most of them for the first time.
  • The 1962 Detgiz edition was expanded to include an additional 6 stories.
  • The 1967 edition added 4 stories and replaced "Моби Дик" with "Глубокий поиск".
  • All subsequent Russian editions have included all 20 stories. The only exception was the 1975 edition, which dropped "Скатерть-самобранка".
  • According to Boris Strugatsky's notes as printed in volume 5 of the German language Collected Works ('Werkausgabe #5'), the Strugatsky brothers originally intended these stories to form a novel. However, due to various political and publishing obstacles, it remained a collection of episodes. According to the same source a further revision of the texts did get published in a Russian edition of their complete works around 2001, which could be the intended fix-up.
  • All publications indexed at ISFDB, including translations, are collections, except for the French edition (Les revenants des étoiles, Hachette, "Le Rayon Fantastique" #120), presented as a novel. They may include different subsets of the twenty stories.
