Note: This story is an excerpt from a series of stories that were originally serialized in six issues of Pearson's Magazine as “Stories of Other Worlds” around 1900. They were combined into a fixup titled A Honeymoon In Space and published in 1901. The excerpt found in anthologies is the first 2/3rds of chapter XIII. The original serials seem to be at http://www.forgottenfutures.com/game/ff2/ and the fixup is at http://www.forgottenfutures.com/game/ff2/honeymn.htm.

in shillings, or shillings and pence, where 20 shillings

Shillings were indicated with a variety of suffixes, e.g.

is additional pence, usually 6 (half a shilling) but
sometimes 3 or 9 (a quarter of a shilling or three-quarters
