Note: Written 1841, published as an 1851 book in December 1850
"originally written in 1841 for the twelve-year-old Effie (Euphemia) Gray, whom Ruskin later married." --Wikipedia
Published in a United States book no later than 1855, when it was not too well-known. According to a short review of Curious Stories About Fairies and Other Funny People (Ticknor & Co.),
(quote) "The King of the Golden River", "The Good Natured Bear", and two or three other stories, are apparently indigenous in our own soil.
--Detroit Free Press 1855-12-01 p2
